Returning the car — the post-trip inspection
How to close out cleanly so your deposit releases within 72 hours.

Before you hand back the keys
Refuel to the level you picked up at (or charge an EV to the listing's required state-of-charge — usually 80%). Keep the receipt; you may need to upload it.
Remove all personal items. Quick-vacuum if you ate in the car. Wipe down sticky spots. FairCar doesn't require a wash, but a clean return helps your guest rating.
The return inspection
Open the trip page, tap 'Start return inspection,' and walk the same path as pickup — same angles, same close-ups.
Record the final odometer and fuel/SoC. The app calculates mileage overages automatically based on what you booked.
Confirm with the host in person or via the app before you walk away. Once both sides submit, the deposit hold is queued for release.
After return
Deposit holds release in 3–10 business days depending on your bank. Pre-authorizations are released by FairCar within 72 hours of a clean return.
If the host files a damage claim, you'll get a notification with photos and a chance to respond. Never DM the host about a claim — use the dispute page so everything is on the record.
Leave a review within 14 days. Both reviews publish at the same time so neither side can retaliate.
Sign in and message the FairCar admin team from your in-app Messages — a real person replies within one business day. We don't outsource support.
