Mileage caps and overage fees — read this before you book a road trip

Each listing sets its own daily, weekly, and monthly mileage cap. Defaults are 200 mi/day, 1,000 mi/week, 2,500 mi/month — but a host can offer more or less.

Caps are pooled across the trip — a 3-night booking at 200 mi/day gives you 600 miles total, not a hard cap each day.

Overage rates are shown on the listing before you book — typically $0.45–$0.85 per extra mile depending on the vehicle class. EVs and luxury cars are higher.

FairCar calculates overage from start vs. end odometer photos. If the math shows 250 miles over, you'll see the line item on your final receipt within 24 hours of return.

If you know you're driving long, request the host add a 'bonus miles' add-on at checkout (typically $0.30–$0.50 per mile). That's almost always cheaper than the after-the-fact overage rate.
