Don't panic. Here's the timeline, what counts as evidence, and how to dispute fairly.

If a host files a damage claim against you

The 48-hour window

Hosts must file damage claims within 48 hours of trip end. Anything filed later is automatically denied.

You'll get an email and a banner on your trip page with the host's photos, a written description, and a proposed cost.

How to respond

Open the claim → 'Respond.' Upload your own pickup and return photos showing the same area. Add a short written statement.

If your pickup photos clearly show the same damage, the claim is dismissed and your deposit releases in full.

If you accept responsibility, you can settle directly through the page — usually cheaper than letting it go to a third-party estimate.

Escalation

If you and the host can't agree, FairCar mediation reviews both sides' photos within 5 business days. The mediator's decision is binding for amounts under $2,500; larger claims may route to a third-party adjuster.

We do NOT charge your card while a claim is under review. The original deposit hold remains, but no new authorization is made until resolution.
