Security deposits and how coverage works

FairCar does not sell insurance. Here's exactly what the deposit covers and what your personal policy is for.

Built forSmartphoneTabletDesktopEvery FairCar feature works identically across devices.

What FairCar holds

The deposit amount is shown at checkout, but the authorization hold is placed 24 hours before trip start. Amounts are tiered to the vehicle's value, usually $300 for economy cars and up to $3,000 for premium and exotic cars.

The hold is not a charge. It comes off your available credit but is released after the trip closes without a damage claim, typically 3–7 days depending on your card issuer.

What your personal policy is for

FairCar does not provide insurance. Damage and liability flow through the guest's existing personal auto policy (or a credit card's rental coverage where applicable).

Coverage varies by carrier, state, policy, and whether the rental is peer-to-peer. Guests should confirm coverage with their insurer before booking — some carriers exclude car-sharing rentals or require a rider.

When the deposit is applied

If the host opens an approved damage claim, FairCar bills the documented repair amount against the deposit first. Any remaining balance is released to your card.

If repair exceeds the deposit, the host's commercial policy and your personal policy handle the balance — never an off-platform Venmo request.
