Expert play: additional drivers, unlisted drivers, and what to do when you find out
Every booking includes one driver. Spouses, friends, and 'I just let my buddy drive for an hour' all count. Here's how to handle it cleanly.

Add drivers BEFORE the keys change hands
On the trip page → Drivers → Add additional driver. The second driver creates their own account, verifies ID, and accepts the guest agreement. Until they've completed verification, they are not covered.
FairCar does not charge a per-driver fee. You can, optionally, set an Additional driver fee in your listing's fees panel ($5–$15/day is normal). It auto-applies when a second driver is added.
If you discover an unlisted driver mid-trip
Message the guest calmly inside the inbox: 'Hey {{guest_first_name}}, I noticed a second driver. Can you add them on the trip page so they're covered? Takes about 60 seconds.' Don't accuse — many first-time guests don't know the rule.
If they refuse or ignore, file Report issue → Unauthorized driver. The trip is flagged, the deposit is held pending review, and the guest's badges are paused while Trust & Safety investigates.
After-the-fact discoveries
If an incident occurs and post-trip evidence shows an unlisted driver was at the wheel (toll plaza photo, dash cam, security cam), the deposit is applied first and the unauthorized driver is personally on the hook for the balance — not the listed guest's personal policy.
This is a major reason hosts ALWAYS run pre-trip inspection on the FairCar app rather than handing off cold: the verified pickup photo establishes who was actually present at the start of the trip.
